Two years ago a small group of Japanese dog enthusiasts apart of the Nihon Ken Forum community pooled their resources and imported two Hokkaido puppies to Colorado, USA, from Japan, with the assistance of the respected Japanese breed expert, Mr. Shigeru Kato. The two puppies would go on to comprise a “whopping” total of the roughly 10 Hokkaido living outside of Japan and Europe. Most of those 10 are in the United States, with at least two in Canada. More importantly however, those two imports (Genko and Yezo) are now the first pair of Hokkaido in North America to have been bred. It’s far too early to tell if there is anything to come from this breeding, but surely there are exciting times ahead either way!
